How to Plan for Your Next Vacation And When to Order Custom Ears
By Kayla, Maker and founder, Ears of Joy. Written from the studio, by the person who makes them.
Planning for the parks can be overwhelming. As a former cast member, former travel agent, and current park local, let me take some of the stress off your shoulders!
Booking your trip
When you first book your trip, note the dates you can begin booking dining and lightning lanes. Popular restaurants and rides fill up quickly, so you will want to book those as soon as you are able.
If these types of details stress you out, consider using a travel agent! Agents are free of cost, and are paid commission from the parks from the cost of your vacation, and they can often find you a discounted rate!
Planning your outfits
For many of us, outfit planning is part of the fun of the vacation! Start dreaming up what you want to wear. Start in your closet, Amazon, thrift stores, etc., or look at ideas from outfits others have worn before you! Just remember to prioritize comfort and staying true to you.
The perfect finishing touch to any park outfit is a pair of ears. I recommend ordering these as early as you can, but 3 to 4 weeks before your trip at the latest, to avoid stress around items arriving on time.
Ordering custom ears
If you want to wear something one-of-a-kind and unique to yourself, custom ears may be the perfect thing for you! Consider starting the process early. I always want you to be thrilled with your mouse ears, so having plenty of time to receive a mockup, make any desired changes, plus processing and shipping time, will always allow you to be more excited for the arrival of your new pieces and not have to worry about the time of their arrival.
Planning your park days
Start by determining how many days you plan to spend at the parks, and whether you plan to park hop. If you wish to park hop, it is wise to consider pairing a park that opens early with a park that closes late. Arriving at park open allows you to hop on rides at low wait times, and getting in line for a ride minutes before park close almost always guarantees you the lowest wait time of the day.
Where to start
I recommend choosing a ride that keeps a high wait time throughout the day to hop on first thing in the morning. You can eliminate quite a bit of standing in line if you follow this rule.
Then, work your way around the park's natural pattern. Refrain from skipping around before you have cleared an area, unless you have a good reason (a high demand ride just reopened with a 20 minute wait, you have a dining reservation on the other side of the park, etc.). This will save your feet from a lot of soreness the next day, and save you quite a bit of time you would have spent walking.
But when will I eat?
I always recommend eating at odd times, specifically, early or late. Many rides find themselves with lower wait times around 12:00 to 1:00 P.M. and 5:00 to 6:00 P.M. while most are enjoying their meals.
If you want to make a lunch reservation, for example, I highly recommend making a 10:30 A.M. reservation. It sounds early, but by the time you are seated, send in your order, and are served, you probably will not be eating until around 11:00, which allows you to be hopping on a ride by about noon!
My personal tips
Finally, I recommend saving shows and snacks for lulls in the day. When everyone is tired of riding rides, when everything you want to ride has too long of a wait, or it is just too hot outside, grab an ice cream or hit a show! Shows rarely have waits since they can seat so many guests, so they are a great way to cool off and wait out the crowds. But most importantly, remember the goal is to have fun!
